Crime shows are something I always remember being interested in. Catching bad guys, getting justice for the victims, and the thrill of the hunt make them a pretty popular form of entertainment.
These types of shows go all over board as far as content in concerned. Some focus on serial killers, others on drug trafficking, and yet others are centered around different types of crime entirely.
After sorting through and watching a whole bunch over the years, I’d love to share with you what I consider to be the best Netflix crime shows and movies!
Featuring Jason Bateman as the lead, this show is dark, brooding, and outright brutal at times. Bateman plays a money-launderer for a drug cartel and is forced to move his family to the Ozarks when old partnerships in Chicago die (literally).
From the character development to the harrowing plot twists, you will be on the edge of your seat for every second of every episode.
There are two seasons out so far and both are great! I do want to warn you the content is incredibly rough, with just about everything being shown on camera. So, viewer discretion is advised. Another good thing to note is this series is complex and cerebral in nature. Some crime shows are easy to follow and understand; this is not one of them.
Set back in the seventies, this series focuses on the origins of the terminology and profiling of serial killers. Holden Ford and Bill Tench are the main characters, playing lower-level FBI agents who are in charge of road school or driving around California to educate local police departments on new behavioral science findings.
Ford starts this project on the side where he interviews the most notorious living serial killers and tries to find the similarities between them. Eventually, the project generates attention from intellectuals and higher-level FBI agents, allowing them to pursue the study full-time.
The first season ends with Holden’s life imploding as he lets things get out of control with the project.
Only one season of Mindhunter has been released, but it’s very intriguing! Once again, this is a series with very mature content, so viewer discretion is advised.
It took me a long time to get around to watching this series, but I’m so glad I started it. Dexter is a serial killer who kills serial killers. He was adopted by a cop during his childhood and grew up with that family for most of his life. It was his father that noticed his psychopathic urges and encouraged him to use it for good.
Dexter works as a blood analyst at a Florida Police Department, where his sister is a homicide detective and struggles to act ‘normal’. Having a girlfriend, trying to express human emotions, and being incredibly careful with his secret are all common problems that Dexter face.
I’m not even finished with the first season yet, but there are eight seasons total. Viewer discretion is advised for this series, as well. In comparison to the other two series I mentioned, this one is definitely lighter-hearted and easier to follow the story line.
